Thanks to its well-established recycling scheme of plastic, glass, and aluminium containers, South Australia now leads the nation in the recovery, recycling and litter reduction of this waste. As of December 2013, the state boasted an overall return rate of 80 percent.

While the Northern Territory also has such a scheme in place, territory recycling figures were not available since the scheme has only been in place since 2012, following a lengthy legal battle headed by Coca Cola Amatil.

This FACT indicates those state and territories which have a container deposit scheme in place. A value of 1 has been awarded to states and territories that have a recycling scheme in place, while a value of zero has been allocated to those states/territories with no such scheme. This data is correct as of March 29 2018.
