Access to fresh produce and reducing food miles is an important part of being a foodie destination: driven by fresh, local produce, many of Australia's acclaimed restaurants make use of ingredients grown in their locale. The availability and production of fresh produce is also an indication of a healthy and sustainable aricultural sector, important for the establishment of financially and environmentally sustainable cities.

In 2011-12, Queensland’s share of fresh produce sector turnover increased from 29.1 per cent to 32.5 percent, while that of Victoria decreased from 30.4 percent to 26.0 percent.
