This FACT indicates the total number of reported cases of sexual assault in each state, as a proportion of 100,000 persons. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has suggested that this data for the Northern Territory, Tasmania and the ACT be intepreted with caution as it has a relative standard error over 50%. The figure has been taken from cases where the victim is over 18 years of age only.
The state with the highest number of reported assaults in 2016-17 was the Northern Territory, with 706.21 cases per 100,000 persons. The state with the lowest was Tasmania, with 287.98 recorded cases per 100,000 persons.
