This is an important indicator, since dairy is Australia's third largest rural industry, and a major regional employer. The employment generated through the dairy industry is not limited to on-site farm work, but extends to processing, manufacturing and distribution of all dairy products. Australians are amongst the largest milk consumers per capital, as well as a top exporter of the product.

The state with the highest percentage in 2013 is Victoria with 43.25 percent. The state with the lowest is tied between the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory with 0 percent.
