The livestock industry represents a strong part of the national economy, with the off-farm meat value of Australia's beef valued at around A$12 billion. The gross value of Australian cattle and calf production is estimated at A$8 billion.

The state with the highest number of cattle livestock is Queensland, with 12,349,000 cows. The state with the lowest is the Australian Capital Territory, with 9,000 animals in 2013.
